On-Line School Options in Snohomish County
Is Online Schooling Right For You?
These questions can help you decide whether online learning is for you:
Do I have basic computer skills?
Do you know how to navigate to a web site, to copy and paste from a web page into an email, save a file etc?
Do I have the time to do this? Can I budget my time to do this?
If you are considering online school because you don't have the time for regular school, you might reconsider. You will still have to put about the same amount of time into online school; however, you can create your own schedule. This means that you can work in the middle of the night or early in the morning if you want. You will still have deadlines for turning in assignments and you will still have established school years and grading periods. You must make time to take the class. Students who commit the same time each and every day to an online class are most likely to be successful.
Am I flexible and accountable?
Web sites crash, files get lost, online things happen and you must be flexible and be “able to go with the flow”. You also must be accountable for getting your assignments turned in and communicating with your teachers as needed.
Do I ask questions?
In a face-to-face class teachers can see when students don’t understand something – the blank stare is a good indicator. Online the only way to know if you need help is if you ask for it. Are you willing and able to ask for help before you get frustrated?
Can I communicate in and learn from the written word?
Are you a good reader? Do you enjoy typing, writing and spelling? If you enjoy talking and listening to your teacher lecture or watching a movie to learn then online learning is NOT for you. If you learn well by reading and writing then online learning may be for you.
Am I self motivated?
If you are thinking that regular school has too much homework and it's hard for you to keep up in your regular classes, online classes are going to be even more difficult for you. No one is going to be looking over your shoulder to make sure you are working and not watching You Tube videos or updating your Facebook page. Unless you have a personal assistant, no one is going to be right there when you need help either. Help is available, but you will have to wait for email or be able to call in or communicate on a live chat, depending on the program you're in. You will need to step up and accept responsibility for working in your online class. After all it is your credit that you are earning
Do I know how to use email or live web chat to communicate?
As old school as it may be many online schools still use email to communicate with students. You will likely be sending your work in via email as well as asking questions and they will be responding via email. If you don’t have and use an email account you might not be able to “attend” an online school.
Compare Online Schools
Check with your school district before looking elsewhere, many now offer free online school. If you are under 21 years old, you should never have to PAY for your online high school . Also be sure that the school you're enrolling in is ACCREDITED. If it's not, your diploma will probably not be accepted for college entry. This might seem unimportant right now, but you never know when you might decide to go to college.
