Guide to Gangs
Is my son or daughter in a gang?
Gang involvement and association is more common than most parents would like to admit. Many parents don't realize that they are BUYING the clothing that identifies their own children as being affiliated with certain gangs. Did you know that gangs wear colors other than red and blue? Some musical bands represent certain gangs or gang-like activities, even some sports teams and name brand clothing can be gang-related. The National gang center has a parent's guide to gangs. The Office of the Superintendant of Public Instruction has a gang guide, too. This one is available in multiple languages. Read through these to know what to look for if you suspect your child may be getting involved in a gang. If you're looking for something closer to home, Snohomish County has it's own publications: Snohomish County Gang Awareness Guide and Parent's Handbook on Gangs. Gangs may seem like a phase that your child is going through, but many times it leads to drugs, violence, or other serious criminal activity including death. Some things to look for are: tattoos (especially three triangular dots on the hand or face or "old english"-style writing), nicknames, bruises from fighting, unexplained money, grafitti-style artwork, and changes in behavior and school.
